I have more than 20 years of experience in international dispute avoidance, management, and resolution, working for and with businesses, governments, and in private practice in many States. As a global citizen and experienced in common and civil law traditions, I am multi-lingual and have developed a deep understanding of cultural differences.

Early dispute prevention

I develop and implement tailored and proactive strategies, and foster open communication, to prevent disputes before they arise or stop their escalation. Key is to identify potential sources of disputes and then address them early so that a dispute does not even arise. I work closely with clients to develop customized dispute prevention programs that align with their specific interests, needs, circumstances and industry dynamics. The programs focus on enhancing relationships, promoting collaboration, and establishing clear frameworks for addressing disputes.

Appropriate dispute resolution

I tailor dispute resolution processes to individual interests and needs, selecting and using appropriate processes. This is appropriate dispute resolution (ADR). Because every conflict is unique, a one-size-fits-all approach is generally not appropriate. In close collaboration with clients or parties, I assess the nature of the dispute, all circumstances, any cultural differences, any goals and desired outcomes, but also possible constraints. Together, we then design and implement customized dispute resolution processes that align with their preferences and objectives, while also considering the broader context in which the dispute arises.

Integrated dispute management

Integrated dispute management (IDM) underpins my approach, which involves typically a number of different steps, including:

  • Early identification and assessment of disputes: The goal is to identify and address disputes early, before they escalate into full-blown conflicts.
  • Prevention: IDM seeks to prevent disputes from arising in the first place by developing and implementing effective dispute prevention strategies.
  • Resolution: IDM uses a variety of dispute resolution techniques, including negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and litigation, to resolve disputes.
  • Follow-up: IDM includes a follow-up process to ensure that the dispute is resolved in a way that is fair and sustainable.

Integrated dispute management is a valuable tool because by taking a holistic approach to dispute management, clients and parties can save time, reduce costs, improve relationships, and protect reputations.

Mediator and arbitrator

As mediator and negotiator, I enable parties to actively participate in crafting mutually agreeable solutions. I promote constructive dialogue, bridge cultural differences, inject empathy, and assist in identifying common ground so that parties can reach fair and lasting solutions that resolve disputes. As arbitrator I am guided by the highest legal and ethical standards, promoting access to justice and due process. I also help parties to meld mediation and arbitration to effective, efficient, and transparent hybrid processes.
